Catoptromancy - divination using mirrors - appears in ancient Greece, where bronze discs were used for this purpose. John Dee, Queen Elizabeth I's court astrologer, used an obsidian mirror that was almost certainly Aztec in origin. The dark surface is not decorative; it serves a specific function in the practice.
